It is strongly recommended that students on the Ancient History and Archaeology pathway take 40 credits of Latin or Greek in their second year. If the student has taken first-year Latin or Greek, these may be chosen from LT2001, LT2003, LT2003 and LT2004 (for Latin) or GK2001, GK2002, GK2003 and GK2004 (for Greek). If the student has not taken first-year Latin or Greek, they may be chosen from LT1001, LT1002, LT1003 and LT1004 (for Latin) or GK1001, GK1002, GK1005 and GK1006 (for Greek).

Automatic entry to Honours requires

  • pass and have an average grade 11 or better in modules marked *
  • pass and have an average grade 11 or better in modules marked ^

Students who meet the requirements specified above, and who meet all other programme requirements, will be given automatic entry into Honours programmes.

Students following the Ancient History and Archaeology pathway may, with the permission of the Heads of School concerned, replace 30 credits from the range AA4000-AA4989,AN4000-AN4989,CL4000-CL4989 with appropriate modules in Medieval History.

Students following the Greek and Latin pathway may take GK3021, GK3022, LT3017 and LT3018 only in their second language, not their main language, and only if they have taken their second language for not more than one year at beginners’ level only (i.e. GK1001 and GK1002 or LT1001 and LT1002 or equivalent modules at the College of William and Mary.

Further requirements

Choose 120 credits in academic year

Students following the Ancient History and Archaeology pathway may, with the permission of the Heads of School concerned, replace 30 credits from the range AA4000-AA4989,AN4000-AN4989,CL4000-CL4989 with appropriate modules in Medieval History.

Students following the Greek and Latin pathway may take GK3021, GK3022, LT3017 and LT3018 only in their second language, not their main language, and only if they have taken their second language for not more than one year at beginners’ level only (i.e. GK1001 and GK1002 or LT1001 and LT1002 or equivalent modules at the College of William and Mary.

Study abroad

In the case of students who spend part of the Honours programme on a recognised Study Abroad scheme, the Programme Requirements will be amended to take into account overseas courses which are approved by the relevant St Andrews School in the Learning Agreement (see www.st-andrews.ac.uk/students/study-abroad/academic ).
